Stradbroke & Peel Island

We drifted between Stradbroke and Peel island for a bit over a week, moving according to the weather.

After a day of exploring on and off shore at Peel, we anchored near South Straddie and headed for the dunes to watch the sunset.

That sand dune looks like a top spot to watch the sun go down!

That sand dune was way taller than it looked.

I’m not very fit.

When we got to the base and realized how high it is, I started backing out but the captain literally pulled me up (thank god).

Maybe it’s a bit bigger than initially thought

We got some awesome pictures.

How do we get back down ???
Cosy spot at the end of the day

We went up to the popular Tipplers – there is a campground, and a cafe/bar/restaurant with basic supplies on offer.

We went mid-week and got lunch – people with the same idea arrived while we were waiting and the place quickly filled up. I would hate to see what it’s like on the weekend.

That afternoon we saw dolphins!

We sailed up to North Stradbroke – Dunwich. We went in for a look, but it was so cold.

I keep rugging up and putting on long pants to go onshore, only to realize they will get when I jump out of the tender. Can’t wait to get to the warmer weather.

We picked up some really good sourdough at Straddie Market Co. The loaf didn’t last long and the weather turned, so we spent the next 2 days bunkered down watching movies and hanging out for more sourdough.

Reprieve from the rain doesn’t last long

The conditions stopped us from going on shore, but thankfully the weather eased for sunset. We enjoyed a sundowner and cured my cabin fever.

There are a few wrecks around Stradbroke – the tides were low in the daytime while we were there, so it was difficult to anchor in out of the weather – but it allowed us to walk over to one of the wrecks.

Iced coffee = necessity

The first time I saw a wreck I was impressed, but I can confidently say if you’ve seen two you’ve seen them all. It might be nice to snorkel around some, but they lowkey become an eyesore.

We saw on maps there is a waterfall on the island, which you can access through a creek. We putted around the coast looking for the creek opening and eventually found the way in. The area leading up to the river mouth is very shallow and there is a little channel along the river where you could motor, but we walked the tender along. The water is fresh and ideal for topping up the tanks if you need it.

The waterfall itself is…. a drainpipe.

A tranquil area, but a drainpipe.

Calm water

We didn’t get up to Amity because of the weather, but I am looking forward to seeing more of North Stradbroke.

What a dreamy coastal escape! Loved the honesty about the dune climb (been there 😅), the dolphin sighting, and that sourdough obsession—totally relatable. Despite the weather hiccups, it sounds like a refreshing trip full of charm and small adventures. Can’t wait to read about Amity next!
